Arthur miller issues detailed descriptions of the setting to make symbolic connections between place and the traditional ideologies held within it. He does this by using an allegory in the story which presents McCarthyism through which hunts in the 1600’s. In the extract, it describes a room in great detail, quoting; ‘There is a narrow window at the left’. This can be seen as purposeful language use to describe left-wing ideologies. It describes the left wing (which was what everybody was forced to be against) as bring narrow. This can symbolise the narrow window of opportunity to express left wing views. This idea is supported by the comparison of right wing ideologies. In the extract, it reads; ‘A candle still burns near the bed, which is at the right’. This could symbolise how the right wing ideologies are still burning strongly, being visible and setting any other views alight.

Kai, this is a very interesting line of thought. You should continue to pursue this.
Try not to be too clever all of the time though. Sometimes a simple, well thought through answer will achieve the highest grades.
Try also to avoid the phrase ‘quoting’. It makes you sound too pretentious and not scholarly. Embedding your quotations is better, often by using a character’s name.
You also need to work on the structure of your answers. At times you get a little muddled – the language analysis must always come first.
